Coping with lifted Safer at Home orders

GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- With Safer at Home restrictions loosening, more people are getting a sense of hope that things will return back to normal.

"We're put in a time where we have never, in the last century never experienced anything like this," said Becky Hanke. She's a licensed marriage and family therapist, and the owner of Modern Wellness Therapy in Green Bay.

For many of us, it may seem like having to stay home was never going to end which drew up many emotions. These include anxiety, depression, and anger, Hanke said.

Now a new wave of emotions are popping up as orders are lifted across the state. But with so many unknowns remaining about the virus, Hanke said we need to have a conversation with ourselves about what our lives are going to look like as these restrictions are lifted.

"One, how do we feel about that order being lifted and what does that change?" she said. "Part of that is going to have to be a decision for families to make themselves; and when we kind of look at the facts, coronavirus isn't going anywhere right now, the statistics are what they are."

Hanke said to ask yourself what risks are you willing to take as we begin to reopen our economy.

"For instance, I have two 3-year-olds right now. So bringing them back into the community I have to be more aware as a parent how often they're putting their hands in their mouth and is that a risk I'm willing to take right now? That's not just a risk for myself and my husband, but also for my in-laws or anybody else who we would have contact with because there still is a risk."

As we look forward to a time of getting back to 'normal,' she adds it's important to maintain a routine during this time. It'll help create a sense of structure.

If you are struggling with mental health issues, she adds to reach out to your primary care physician.
