ST. IGNACE, Mich. (NBC 26) — A U.S. Coast Guard ship came to the rescue when the Mackinac Island ferry Huron lost steering Tuesday night.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard 9th District Facebook page, the ferry lost steering at about 6 p.m. in the Straits of Mackinac with 144 passengers aboard. The USCG said the Coast Guard Cutter Katmai Bay took an unscheduled break from icebreaking duty to help the ship.

The cutter diverted to assist while all the passengers were safely transferred to a local commercial vessel that also serves the island, the Senator, then safely disembarked in St. Ignace.

Katmai Bay eventually took the Huron in tow and also brought her safely to St. Ignace.
