KEWAUNEE (NBC 26) -- Did you know your deactivated cell phone can still call 911? City of Kewaunee Police warn people on giving old mobiles to children to play with.
Even if your phone is deactivated and doesn't have a SIM card, it still has the ability to call 911. This is helpful if people want to have a spare phone in a vehicle or bag with a charger to be able to call law enforcement in case of emergencies.
The Kewaunee Police say they have had a total of 142 hang-ups in 2019. They say each hang-up must be investigated in case of an emergency. Although not all of the hang-ups have been from deactivated cell phones, they say if even the small portion could be eliminated it would free up some of law enforcement's time.
They ask parents to think twice before giving an old cell phone to children to play with.
