GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — Roads were closed for several hours early Monday morning after a fully-loaded cattle truck crashed.

It happened on I-43 at Exit 185, the ramp onto State 54 and University Avenue in Green Bay. Southbound lanes were closed while the scene was cleared.

According to the Brown County Sheriff's Office, an eastbound cattle hauler carrying 36 cattle, bound for JBS Packing, crashed in the roundabout of Packerland Dr.

The driver apparently thought he was still on the highway and lost control of the semi, rolling it onto its side in the roundabout, the Sheriff's Office said.

24 head of cattle were transported away from the scene alive, the Sheriff's Office said. 12 head of cattle were either killed in the crash or had to be put down as a result of the crash.
