OSHKOSH (NBC26) — Oshkosh West High School students have been planting and propagating for months, preparing for the annual FFA plant sale.

“Doing things like this and having the community support us really helps us grow our ag classes and do more fun things," said Danielle Zentner, a senior at Oshkosh West. “I live on a farm and I want to stay involved in the ag industry, and even though this is kind of like the horticulture part of it, I still really enjoy it.“

Some students, like Zentner, are experienced planters, while others gave it a first try at school.

“I kind of got into it just coming to the outdoors and the friends and the people, and the things I heard about the classes too," said Raegan Dutscheck, a senior.

Now they couldn't imagine their school day without the agriculture classes.

“There’s a lot of different labs," said Logan Kubasta, a senior. "Everything is hands-on and outside, and that’s the best way I can learn, so I like that.“

It's important for the community to support FFA programs, said Alicia Schultz, class instructor.

“It is all inclusive," she said. "It has many career pathways to follow, and incorporates the classroom aspect of it, the supervised agriculture experience, which is the outside class.“

Students gain an appreciation for nature in the classroom.

“I really like the ones with color," said Kubasta. "It’s nice to have color in your life and always have something to do, take care of them, and that’s always fun.“

The plant sale is going on today through friday from 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and next Monday and Tuesday from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. Head to the back greenhouse at the high school off Southland Ave. If you can't make it at those times, reach out to Schultz at alicia.schultz@oshkosh.k12.wi.us or 920-424-4090 ext. 3067.
