CALUMET COUNTY — Blue-green algae is blooming on Lake Winnebago.

Calumet County health officials say it can be dangerous. The bloom caused the beach to close at High Cliff State Park.

Officials say these blooms usually form when we have hot and dry conditions. While adults may know to avoid the water, officials say pets and children may not.

"The dogs end up going in to that water, they tend to get ill because they ingest that water, they don't know any different. Children too, they go in and they touch the water, they put their fingers in their mouth and that's a problem,” said Calumet County Health Division Manager Bonnie Kolbe.

Experts say these blooms normally form in stagnant water.
