ALLOUEZ (NBC26) — 40 cities towns and villages all over the state are participating in Be Active Wisconsin, a virtual challenge to get people active this March.
“What a great time for communities to just be active now that the weathers getting nicer," said Niki Wendt, Recreation Manager for the city of Appleton.
It’s been almost a year since the COVID-19 pandemic hit Wisconsin, and we could all use a little motivation, said Wendt.
“Over the last year, we’ve all had our set of challenges," she said. "At Parks and Recreation, we are not unique to that. Our world was really flipped upside down over the past year as far as what we were able to offer.”
For $10, participants can set a goal to reach by the end of the month, submit their active minutes weekly and get a t-shirt at the end of the challenge.
"It’s just kind of a great way of kind of getting people out and making it into a fun competition for people to take part in their hometown municipalities and compete against other municipalities across the state," said Matthew Hahn, Recreation Coordinator for the Village of Allouez.
Northeast wisconsin municipalities that are participating also include Green Bay, Kaukana, Little Chute and Marinette. But if your community isn’t part of the challenge, you can help another win the title.
“Allouez would love to have anyone be a part of our team," said Hahn.
Whichever municipality has the highest average minutes of activity wins a trophy, as well as significant bragging rights.
“there’s a little bit at stake here," said Wendt. "And I know Appleton is an active community, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can do.“
The challenge is open to all ages. You can sign up until March 14th.
