ASHWAUBENON, Wis. — Ashwaubenon Public Safety is sharing an older Facebook post to remind the public about proper procedure when handling baby deer, also known as fawns.
Mainly, police want people to stay away from fawns and not to mess with them.
In a shared post, Ashwaubenon Police note how some homeowners have contacted the Humane Officer to help remove fawns from their property. But police say it's better to just wait for the mother deer (a female deer is also known as a Doe) to return and leave with the fawn.
"The fawns will stay put and still by instinct and if left alone the Doe will come back for it and they will move on," Ashwaubenon Police say on Facebook.
If a person stays outside with the deer, police say the mother doe will be reluctant to return and leave with her baby. Police are encouraging homeowners to leave the deer alone and let Mother Nature take its course.
"Our Humane Officer will not interfere with this natural occurrence or remove the animals," the post says. "Just be glad you were able to witness this because it won't last long."
