ALGOMA (NBC 26) — Area beaches can be a great option for cooling off in the summer heat.
Algoma is known for its sandy Crescent Beach and boardwalk. Local officials there are getting ready for a busy summer.
Ken Weinaug, Algoma Chamber of Commerce executive director, says he's seen a rise in the numbers of people coming to the beach in the last few weeks as it's gotten warmer.
The people coming to the beaches provide a boost to the local economy, Weinaug said.
The community has invested in a new beach cleaner that helps keep the beach clean, all the way down to removing cigarette butts, he said.
"If you came here a couple months ago and saw the amount of driftwood that was on the beach here, it was a big task to get all that driftwood off the beach," Weinaug said. "We're gradually getting some of the stones off and with the beach cleaner, over the last three or four weeks they've put a lot of effort into making the beach as nice as it can be."
Weinaug also said people coming to Algoma should keep in mind a lot of the time it's 10 to 15 degrees cooler than temperatures in Green Bay.
