APPLETON (NBC 26) - In wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Appleton Police is encouraging the community to be good neighbors.

The department introduced its "Good Neighbor Program" on Tuesday. The program, police explained, consists of neighbors checking on older adults who may be vulnerable to coronavirus.

Appleton Police cite the CDC and Wisconsin Department of Health Services, which state people older than 60 and those individuals with pre-existing medical conditions (heart disease, diabetes and lung disease) are at a high risk of contracting COVID-19.

The Good Neighbor Program will allow people to request Appleton officers to check on individuals who may not have regular contact with loved ones, neighbors or friends. Officers will not enter homes, police said, but they would be able to speak to the individuals to ensure their well-being.
