APPLETON (NBC 26) — A pop-up vaccination clinic this weekend is aiming to get the Black community vaccinated.
On Saturday, the organization People of Progression (POP) held a COVID-19 vaccine clinic at Taperz Barbershop in partnership with several supporting community sponsors.
Their goal was to take vaccines directly to the people.
“We understand that the Black community is the furthest marginalized as well as the most under-served. So we are an organization who brings resources and we take it to the people. As our campaign for COVID-19 vaccination is, we’re taking it to the people and understanding that we are here to serve our community,” said Kristen Gondek.
She shares how Saturday’s turnout went with people coming in to get vaccinated:
“We eagerly had a few people this morning already waiting for us when we opened our doors and our vaccine clinic has now vaccinated ten people this morning so that is very impressive and we’re happy about that. We’re targeting the Black community specifically but we’re also welcoming anyone who wants to get vaccinated. Our vaccines are free but we’re also offering vouchers right next door for Jimmy’s Chicken and Fish; they are also supporting us in our efforts, which is amazing. We definitely want to see more people come in but, you know, one person, even the fact that we had one person come in today, let alone ten is a step in the right direction,” Gondek said.
William Green was one of the people who came in and got vaccinated for the first time.
“I decided to come out today, as a decision that I made for my family and overall health. Today was my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and I’m really happy that I’ve came down and made this decision,” Green said.
The organization said they will be hosting another vaccination clinic on June 12 for anyone who is still looking to get a shot.
