MARINETTE COUNTY (NBC 26) — After a plow truck was damaged, the Marinette County Sheriff's Office is warning against plowing snow across the road.
"By leaving the windrow of snow you are potentially causing a hazard for someone else," the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post this week.
The sheriff's office said a windrow of snow caused damage to a county plow truck over the weekend.
"Besides plow trucks, unsuspecting drivers could hit the snow thinking it's light and fluffy and it's not, which could [cause] serious damage or injury," the sheriff's office said.
Additionally, the sheriff's office cites the Marinette County Highway Department which says not only is plowing snow across the road dangerous, but it's also unlawful. Wisconsin statutes prohibit pushing or plowing snow onto or across a public highway.
It's also illegal to follow a snowplow closer than 200 feet upon any highway having a posted speed limit of more than 35 mph if the snowplow is engaged in snow and ice removal, according to the Marinette County Highway Department.
"Please make every attempt to properly push the snow legally and safely," the sheriff's office said.
