VILLAGE OF ALLOUEZ, Wis. (NBC 26) -- For 20-plus years a northeastern Wisconsin family has been hosting a yard sale once a summer and it has grown into a community event that draws 1,000's of people in. The sale, which has a bit of something for everyone, is drawing towards the final night of its ongoing event on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at 203 Warren Court in the Village of Allouez.
The Olmsted family says they have recruited at least six different families within their circle to contribute to the ever-growing "flea market." Included in the items up for grabs are sporting goods equipment, clothes, toys from the past, kitchen appliances, records, and just about anything else you could imagine.
The organizers of the event say the "flea market," has grown every year and at this point, they are ready to get part of their summer back, rather than dedicating a week plus worth of work to orchestrate the chaotic weekend of sales. That being said, everyone involved does say they'll miss the chance to catch up with customers who have been visiting them year in and year out.
"I'm not going to miss it too much but I'll miss the people. Because I love hearing, "we were here last year and we found this," and I am like oh my gosh I remember selling that," says Mitchell Olmsted who has been helping run the yard sale since he was a pre-teen.
So what's next for the Olmsteds? Well, the patriarch of the family says next summer he's already planning on skipping out of town when the sale is usually in full swing so that he can take in an Alaskan cruise.
