MILWAUKEE -- Three Wisconsinites have been hospitalized with hepatitis A in an ongoing outbreak tied to blackberries sold in several states , the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) said Wednesday.

Five cases have been confirmed in Wisconsin, with a total of 18 nationally, across six states. Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska are all affected.

The DHS says the blackberries in question were sold at Fresh Thyme Farmers Market and Woodman's Market stores between September 9 and September 30. A common supplier has not been identified.

If you purchased any blackberries during that time, DHS says to throw them away - even if you froze them for later. Hepatitis A symptoms occur between 15 and 50 days after exposure and can last for months. It is rarely fatal, but patients occasionally may need to be hospitalized, DHS says.
