Sunday marked the final day of a successful 2022 sturgeon spearing season.
The Department of Natural Resources reports spearers harvested 83 fish on Lake Winnebago Sunday.
The DNR said spearers harvested a total of 1,518 sturgeon on the Winnebago system this season. Of that number, the Lake Winnebago harvest consisted of 1,169 fish.
After the 16-day season, the DNR said the Lake Winnebago and Winnebago System-wide caps remained "far from being reached." This year’s Lake Winnebago harvest was lower than last season's, but still comes in at the second highest harvest since 2015.
Despite less than ideal water clarity this season, the DNR said the success rate on Lake Winnebago was 9.5%.
A total of 88 fish on the Winnebago System weighed in over 100 pounds, according to the DNR. Those made up 5.7% of the total harvest. The DNR reports the percentage of fish more than 100 pounds is the largest since 2018.
The largest fish speared Sunday weighed in at more than 112 pounds.
