GRAND CHUTE - At 7:40 a.m. Monday the Grand Chute Fire Department was dispatched to 3610 West Spencer Street for a report of a structure fire.
Residents were reporting smoke in the hallway of the apartment building. In addition to Grand Chute Fire units, Appleton and town of Menasha Fire Departments each provided one engine company.
First crews found residents evacuating and smoke showing from the second floor of the 24-unit building. Firefighters initiated an offensive interior fire attack operation, bringing the fire under control within about 15 minutes.
Damage was confined to the one living unit involved, which was vacant at the time of the fire. One Grand Chute Police Officer was evaluated on scene tor smoke inhalation, no other civilian or responder injuries were reported.
Fire personnel remained on scene for about two hours conducting overhaul operations, and allowed all residents to re-occupy their apartments prior to clearing the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no damage estimates were available at this time.
