How Door County pivoted in the 2020 presidential election

Across Northeast Wisconsin, counties went for the same party they did in 2016 except for one: Door County. In 2016, every county in Northeast Wisconsin went for then-candidate Donald Trump, except Menominee County, Wisconsin, which went for Hillary Clinton.

This election, one of those counties Trump won here in Northeast Wisconsin, flipped away from him. According to unofficial results, Democratic nominee Joe Biden won Door County by nearly 300 votes, out of more than 20,000 cast.

Let's talk for a moment about Northeast Wisconsin overall, and the margin of victory. When we say, “margin of victory,” let's use a sports analogy: if the Packers beat the Lions by 3, the margin of victory is 3.

With that said, then-candidate Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton by about 99,000 votes in Northeast Wisconsin in 2016. This election, unofficial results show Northeast Wisconsin went even stronger for him.

His margin of victory in the NBC 26 viewing area over Democratic nominee Joe Biden was about 102,500. But for President Trump, based on the NBC projection, winning here was not enough to overcome his deficits from counties like Milwaukee and Dane.

Northeast Wisconsin came out stronger for him this election, but Milwaukee and Dane counties also came out stronger against him, compared to 2016.
