ALLOUEZ (NBC 26) -- 258 people under care have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Green Bay Correctional Institute, according to the Department of Corrections.

That number is the highest among any detention center in the state. It is also higher than the total number in 32 Wisconsin Counties. Some are expressing concerns. Scott Ellis' son is currently serving a sentence at GBCI and says he tested positive.

"We were supposed to have our weekly video chat on August 14th, but our son never showed up," he said. "He called us later and said 'Dad, I was in the hole. I didn't do anything wrong except test positive for COVID-19.'"

We reached out to the DOC and they sent us this statement:

"Green Bay Correctional does not offer the capacity to separate all involved to a separate building, however each institution determines the most effective place to isolate and quarantine individuals. All individuals that are 'potentially exposed' are quarantined whether they ever test positive or not."

The DOC did not say what may have caused the spread. The department informed us that everyone inside the building must wear a mask. They also said they provide protective equipment for staff.
