GREEN BAY (NBC26) -- Using deadly force is something criminal justice instructors say must be decided on in a split second.
Criminal Justice students at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay were training for different scenarios on Tuesday. Some required physical force, while others required weapons including a gun. Jeff Steeber is a criminal justice instructor at NWTC. He said officers sometimes have very little time to weigh factors before to use deadly force.
"However long it takes for the officer to process and make that decision a lot of times goes back to their training and how they've been trained and their personal experiences on the street and elsewhere to help them make that decision," Steeber explained.
He also said officers are trained to use deadly force to protect themselves or others.
"Their justification to use deadly force is if there's a direct threat either directly to them or to somebody else and they're using force in protection of others," he added.
Steeber said after an officer involved shooting occurs, an outside agency will investigate the incident.
