A suspicious package forced Appleton police officers to close the road in front of the old Outagamie County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon.
It happened on the 400 block of Walnut Street.
Officers said that somebody told police there was a package left by a person acting suspiciously around 11:30 a.m.
The person left the package on the 400 block of Walnut Street.
To be safe, the police department called the joint bomb squad from the Outagmie and Brown County sheriff's offices.
It turned out to be a false alarm.
"Kind of one of those examples of, 'you can never be too sure about what you have there,' because of the location, near a couple of construction trailers and near the old courthouse," Appleton Police Sgt. David Lund said.
Lund said the bag was just a briefcase with court documents. He said police will try to find the person who left it there and figure out why it happened.
