The Algoma Hardwoods building has been a staple on the lakeshore for the past 100 years.
On Tuesday Masonite International Corp. who owns Algoma Hardwoods, announced they're closing the doors next year. Layoffs start January 13.
"It was a real punch in the gut," explains Algoma city administrator, Jeff Wiswell when describing his thoughts when hearing the news.
180 people work at Algoma Hardwoods. Roughly 40 will continue work with Masonite after the closure, but the city is already working on plans for the other 140 people who will be without a job in the new year.
"We're not laying down crying we're the victims, the world is mean, we're ready to go. This is a time for us to reflect and renew," explained Wiswell.
The city reached out to local representatives as well as theBay Area Workforce Development Board. They've already had calls from other businesses wanting those workers.
"There are otherjobs available, in many cases, they're comparable wages and benefits," said Bay Area Workforce Development executive director, Jim Golembeski.
Training will be offered to those laid off. The city wants to bring in a new company to replace the void left from Algoma Hardwoods.
Through it all the city has one message for those who will be impacted.
"Hope is on the way," said Wiswell
City leaders will hold a meeting November 15 with politicians and the Bay Area Workforce Development board to set up future plans.
Layoffs start January 13. The doors close officially to Algoma Hardwoods on August 31.
