DE PERE — A store that has been around for multiple generations has now closed its doors in De Pere. Shopko, the multi-purpose retail chain, announced it would close all locations earlier this year. The De Pere store was one of the first to close.
"It was big news when we heard it was closing," said Kim Flom, the economic development director for the City of De Pere.
The location is right in the middle of downtown. It attracts a lot of traffic around the area, but now the owners will have to fill the void with something else.
"We have been working with the landlords and we have given them a number of different resources," Flom said.
The positive part the city is looking at, is possibly re-developing the area completely.
"It is such a large building with such a large parking lot," Flom said. "There is chance this could turn into new housing or new restaurants."
However, the landlords hold the final say in what will go in the old Shopko building. The list price is set at $6,000,000.
