The Winnebago County Health Department has issued a health alert, telling residents to be aware of blue-green algae in Lake Winnebago.
This year, like in year's past, there's an increase of algae concentrations along the eastern and northern shorelines of the lake, experts said.
Health officials said this is normal this time of year, but people should still be aware of the toxic nature of blue-green algae.
It might not be immediately visible, but can have an odor and officials suggest staying clear of it.
"The health department is in the process of putting up postings at various water entry points so boat landings other access points that will try and help remind recreational water users to be aware of the blue green algae," said Doug Gieryn with the Winnebago County Health Department.
If you or your pets ingest the algae, it can irritate the skin and eyes and can also carry symptoms like stomach and headaches.
Call your doctor if you've been exposed.
