Excited students returned to schools across Northeast Wisconsin Tuesday.
For Washington Middle School students, it was the first time back to class since a teacher resigned in June over alleged harassment and safety concerns at the school.
On Tuesday, the principal told NBC26 the staff is trying to make sure students know the ground rules for school.
The school has a new plan to respond to students who cause trouble and has added staff members.
Part of the first day Tuesday was an assembly aimed at starting the school year with everyone on the same page.
"We want to make sure that students understand policies and procedures and expectations of how we do things, and that they are part of that solution," said Principal Dennis Christensen.
The Green Bay Area Public School District implemented a new behavioral response chart this summer to standardize student punishment across the district. It includes a detailed list of what actions from students would warrant a particular consequence.
Kerstin Westcott, the 6th grade teacher who resigned from the school, told NBC26 earlier this summer that she will be working at a Manitowoc middle school this year.
