The man charged for a July 4 sexual assault in Manitowoc is a convicted sex offender, according to police.
Jeffrey Gove, 59, was charged with first degree sexual assault with a dangerous weapon for allegedly sexually assaulting someone on the south side of town late Tuesday night.
The victim told police Gove held a knife to her stomach and led her behind a business on the 1100 block of 10th Street.
The victim was able to lead police back to the scene. While officers were investigating, Gove approached them, police said.
Police eventually identified him as the suspect and arrested him.
"We have very, very few random assaults that happen like that. usually it's someone that somebody knows, have had contact with the person in the past so such a rare incident like this, for such a random assault we don't see this very often," said Det. Andrew Trilling with the Manitowoc Police Department.
Gove was previously convicted of second degree sexual assault of a child in 1994.
He is being held on a $50,000 cash bond and was ordered to have no contact with the victim.
He will be back in court on July 10.
