No charges filed two months after 16-month-old's death

Girl died before getting to Green Bay hospital

Green Bay police are still looking for answers in the death of a 16-month-old girl, calling it one of the worst cases of child abuse the department has seen.

Police told us back in May that it appears the toddler was repeatedly physically abused, with signs of neglect and severe bruising. The mother's boyfriend was arrested in May and Green Bay police recommended a charge of first degree reckless homicide.

Two months later, no formal charges have been filed by the Brown County District Attorney's Office.

The suspect, who we are choosing not to name until charges are filed, remains behind bars on a parole violation.

The district attorney wouldn't talk with NBC26 Tuesday saying this is still an uncharged case.

Green Bay police called the case tough back in May.

"Everybody pays particular attention to kids, babies and when a baby and a child is a victim of a crime who has no recourse, no defense; it really, kind of really affects all of us,” said Capt. Kevin Warych.

We also reached out to the Brown County Medical Examiner's Office, to find out the results of the autopsy. They were not immediately available to us.

We do know the child's mother had three other children. They were placed in child protective services back in May.

The Brown County District Attorney's Office tells NBC26 they've also considered filing charges against the baby's mother. It's unclear if the office will still move forward with those charges.
