A man from Green Bay has been sentenced to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud in federal court.
Dean D. Young, 62, formerly of Green Bay but currently living in Milwaukee, was also sentenced to three years supervised release and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $201,521.41.
From 2002-2015, Young defrauded the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) of pension and compensation benefits, according to a plea agreement.
Young provided false information to the VA, including claiming that he had to use a wheelchair and could only walk a few steps due to extreme back pain. After one doctor's appointment, the VA doctor saw Young walk across the parking lot without a wheelchair. Law enforcement also obtained video of Young that same day walking in his apartment complex without the aid of a wheelchair or cane, the plea agreement said.
The sentencing judge said it was "massive and blatant fraud" and that the funds were intended for a truly deserving veteran.
