A man accused of sexual assault attacked and injured two Appleton police officers Tuesday.
Investigators were interviewing Kevin VerHoeven, 34, around 11:20 a.m. about an alleged sexual assault of a woman with mental illness at his home in May.
After investigators decided they had enough evidence against him and told him he would be arrested, VerHoeven tried to flee the interview room off the Appleton Police Department lobby, according to officers.
Two officers tried to stop him and he aggressively fought both, injuring them, police said. They were brought to the hospital, treated and released. Both returned to duty.
Multiple officers responded and arrested VerHoeven.
Police referred charges of second degree sexual assault of a person with mental illness, resisting arrest, and two counts of battery to officers.
VerHoeven was previously convicted of second degree sexual assault of a child in 2000.
