Local volunteers have stepped up to help relief efforts after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas, bringing nearly 30 inches of rain to some parts of the Houston area.
The Wisconsin chapter of the American Red Cross sent nearly 50 trained responders to help. That number is expected to double in the next few days, the Red Cross said.
Several people have been killed, and even more injured, due to Hurricane Harvey's devastating effects.
Suellen Hoecker, a first time volunteer, took off from Appleton International Airport Monday to head to Houston.
Volunteers said it's difficult to travel there at a time like this, but also necessary.
"I'm sure there is going to be a lot of devastation as far as houses being torn apart and things like that, a lot of flooding and stuff," said Hoecker. "But as long as I can do my part, that's good. If everybody does a little part, it helps everybody else."
Tom Poe, another Red Cross responder, said his motivations were all about helping others.
"The main thing is you're helping people, and you have to look at it that way otherwise you can't handle stuff like that," Poe said.
The disaster response is likely the largest since Hurricane Katrina, the Red Cross said.
