TOWN OF GRANT (NBC 26) -- Shawano County Sheriff investigators have just identified one of the four people that were injured after a building exploded late Monday afternoon. Investigators say 62-year-old Steve Verg, the owner of the property that exploded in the Town of Grant, was one of the four people injured during the explosion.
The explosion happened just off of County Road M and Verg Road in the Town of Grant at around 4 p.m Monday. Following the explosion, all four people were transported by an ambulance or a helicopter to burn centers according to investigators.
As of Tuesday afternoon Reverend Craig Nehring of Zion and Peace Lutheran Church with insight into this tragedy, says the four victims are currently being treated at a burn center in Madison. Nehring adds that one of the victims is a member of his congregation and that he has a long road ahead to recovery.
Reverend Nehring says the four people injured are all well respected people from the community and all are members of their local Lions Club chapter. Nehring adds that the people injured were preparing for a festival in their community coming up this weekend, before the building exploded.
The cause of the fire and explosion are still unknown. Shawano County Sheriff investigators say it could be sometime, before answers as to how this tragic event unfolded will be released.
"These things take time and from doing this job for numerous years it could be weeks or months before we really get an answer," said Detective Sergeant Gordon Kowalski with the Shawano County Sheriff's Office.
The Shawano County Sheriff's Office is investigating with the assistance of the Wisconsin State Fire Marshal's Office.
