The third annual Get Your Rear in Gear - Green Bay run/walk will be taking place this Saturday.

The annual run/walk, powered by the Colon Cancer Coalition is presented by Aurora BayCare Medical Center. Organizers are expecting about 300 registrants for the 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5 event.

The event raises awareness and money for colon cancer screenings and early detection.

The event features a 5K (3.1-mile) run and a 1.5-mile walk. A kids' run is also planned, along with festivities and opportunities to celebrate survivors and support those family members and caregivers left behind following a loved one's fight with colon cancer.

“We have a lot of teams coming back again, a lot of them are doing it memory of someone, or in honor of someone, a family member that they may have lost from colon cancer,” said Mike Schmidt, race director. “So it's great to see those families coming out and helping get that message across.”

The race route will curve around the hospital campus at 2845 Greenbrier Road on Green Bay's east side and through the nearby neighborhoods.

According to the American Cancer Society, "colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States." The organization's estimates for the number of colorectal cancer cases in the United States for 2017 are:
