Green Bay police say five children were left alone inside of a house with drugs within arm’s reach last week.
They were found during a routine visit from a school resource officer on the 1200 block of Wilson Avenue on August 21. According to the criminal complaint, officers tried to get inside the house once they realized the kids, ranging in age from 6 to 1 year old, were alone.
One of the children refused to let police in, and even said their mother would shoot the police once she returned home.
"Anytime a child is involved, it pulls at the heartstrings, of any human, and when children are exposed to dangers that they don't know are dangers, it's very scary,” said Capt. Kevin Warych with the Green Bay Police Dept.
Those dangers led to the arrest of their mother, 22-year-old Fantaijah Truss.
We tried reaching out to Truss Wednesday to try and get her side of the story, but when we got to the house, all we saw was a card from Child Protective Services and a note saying the house had been abandoned.
Police say, this case sends an urgent message, that parents are responsible for their kid’s surroundings.
"Parents just need to make good decisions; they need to do some background checks on people that they leave their children with so that their children are safe,” said Capt. Warych.
Green Bay police say there's no minimum age requirement for kids to be left home alone. If convicted, truss could face up to nine months in jail.
