The Brown County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution Wednesday night opposing a mine project near the Menominee River by the Wisconsin-Michigan border.
The Board voted 21-0 with 2 abstaining to pass the resolution. Protestors of the Back Forty Mine project said they need the help of Brown County to get their message to the state.
Many of them took their frustration to the podium. Some members of Native American tribes also spoke. They said many of their ancestors are also buried where the mine would go.
The protestors worry about any potential contamination to the water, which they said could have a negative impact on wildlife and the state's tourism.
The same resolution was also passed in Marinette County.
The mine's CEO has previously said the company is committed to environmental responsibility and a sustainable use of resources.
