The Algoma City Administrator, Jeff Wiswell, has shared that the City Marina and Crescent beach will be temporarily closed.

The Algoma Fire Department tells NBC26 that five boats caught fire late Wednesday night on two separate docks.

Four of those boats are underwater at this time and one has been removed from the harbor.

Algoma's fire chief says they are still looking to notify owners of the affected boats.

Multiple agencies responded to set up shields to stop the fire from spreading to other boats.

Right now they're dealing with gas and oil in the water.

"Obviously the fuel load on these boats is quite heavy, and that was one of the challenges that we had. We had a lot of fuel burning, and a lot of fuel escaped into the harbor. Right now we're working to dyke off the harbor so we don't have anymore escape of hazardous materials or flammable liquids into the main body of water," said Algoma fire chief Tom Ackerman.

Undamaged boats cannot be removed until the scene is clear.

There were first mates sleeping on some of the boats at the time the fire broke out, but all were able to escape.

The cause remains under investigation at this time, although chief Ackerman says they do know which boat the fire started on.

Investigators will be reviewing security footage to see if there was any suspicious activity.
